Microsoft Edge Whats new

Microsoft Edge Whats new

Microsoft is working on a new-generation browser.Currently in beta, it will be integrated into Windows 10 to IE sides.

Download Edge (the browser is available in pre-release beta of Windows 10)

Edge is the new Microsoft browser (code name: Spartan). It will be released with Windows 10 whose launch is announced for July 29. The publisher has Edge as a new generation of browser, powerful, innovative, and especially designed for the modern web. It is already possible to test the beta by downloading the Windows 10 desktop Preview, or   Windows Mobile 10 beta for (designed for smartphones and small tablets). Edge will not replaceMicrosoft Internet Explorer completely, but will be offered as an alternative to it. It will be integrated with Windows 10 alongside IE that will remain present in the desktop version of the OS.

A browser that is more efficient than Chrome and Firefox

Microsoft insists on the optimization work conducted around the motor of its browser. Objective: To accelerate the implementation of websites, including via improved JavaScript JIT compiler Chakra .
According to the publisher, the optimization allow Edge to record JavaScript execution performance than Chrome and Firefox. In support of its analysis, it highlights the results recorded by the browser to the Jet Stream tests (developed by Apple) and Octane 2.0 (proposed by Google).

The results of the Jet Stream test, Microsoft Edge runs web applications 1.6 times faster than Internet Explorer 11. According Octane test, it would even be 2 times more efficient in this exercise as its predecessor. Both comparisons were made with a variation of browsers 64bit on an HP machine (equipped with Windows 10) under the hood with 12 GB of RAM and a next generation processor (Intel Core i7 860 CPU clocked at 2.80GHz).

Annotate web pages and save them in printable format

The browser will annotate a web page
Among its main functional peculiarities, Microsoft Edge to annotate a web page. Then save the "Web Note" in OneNote or share it with a colleague or friend (via the sharing feature of Windows 10).Another feature highlighted by Microsoft: the ability to save web content in a playlist, then to consult (including offline) in a more readable format stripped navigation content. The user can also translate pages in their language.
Microsoft has also integrated the browser Cortana. Limited for now to the beta of Microsoft Edge in the US version of Windows 10, the personal voice assistant allows particularly be pushing content associated with current web page view. If it is the site of a company such as Cortana may propose a route to the office of that company from your location, associated content, or trace a contact of this company you have saved in your phone book ...

Support extensions

Another major change compared to Internet Explorer was announced without being supplied with the browser beta: Microsoft Edge will support the extensions. The editor joins the strategy initiated long ago by other browsers, the first of which its two main competitors Firefox and Chrome. When Build in April, the group hit hard by announcing that extensions designed for Firefox and Chrome can be worn under Edge with minor changes.
Several features supposed to appear in Edge and had leaked on the Internet have also not been confirmed. Some sources (like The Verge ) had referred in particular management of tabbed group. A device that is designed to provide a ranking of tabbed categories (personal tabs, professionals ...).

And for web site developers?

Initially, Microsoft Edge must be fitted with the MSHTML rendering engine (based on Trident), to ensure browser compatibility with sites designed for older versions of IE. This is what Microsoft was indicated in a post published on January 22 . It will eventually be the case. In a March 24 post , Microsoft said it had changed its mind. Edge will be limited to EdgeHTML new engine designed by the American group to support the latest web standards. The publisher also emphasizes the work of its teams to support these standards "on the model of other modern browsers."
Microsoft Edge will be a so-called maintenance "as a service"
As for Internet Explorer, it will be indented but still maintained in Windows 10 desktop version."It will continue to be supported for applications running only with the legacy technologies such as IE ActiveX or helpers," said Microsoft. While IE was to use "the same dual rendering engine that Spartan", the publisher has again changed his tune. Internet Explorer will have only MSHTML.

Microsoft Edge: "the future"

Microsoft said that these changes were decided based on community feedback, expressed through the Windows beta program 10. To justify these reversals, the editor indicates that the maintenance of the double engine in Internet Explorer could lead to different behaviors between versions of IE for Windows 10, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. From the perspective of developers, the difference between the two browsers is well now clearer, particularly in terms of positioning. "We believe that this change clarifies the roles," said Kyle Pflug, Program Manager for Project Spartan. "Microsoft Edge is the future, the default for all Windows clients browser 10."

As mentioned in another post Microsoft dating back to last November , EdgeHTML is also integrated into Windows 10 to run web applications. Microsoft refers to the site Modern.IEto monitor the standardization work around EdgeHTML and Microsoft Edge. Overall, "the objective is to ensure that all websites that operate on other browsers work equally well on Microsoft Edge" explains Pierre Lagarde, evangelist at Microsoft France. "We had a tendency to sometimes be too close to the standards. This could create a difference with other browsers."

Internet Explorer: 17% market share in France.

Finally, Microsoft Edge will have a maintenance process called "as a service" (similar to that provided for Windows 10). The browser could then be very regular developments, like Chrome and Firefox.
Still Edge could prove to be an interesting weapon to curb the drop on the Microsoft browser market. Internet Explorers market represents only 17% in France.
